It is a simple and well known fact that a key factor in maintaining your health is good oral hygiene. Problems that start in the mouth can have severe consequences for other systems in the body, including the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys.

I personally had a health insurance client a few years back who while trying to save money on insurance bought a health plan with a high deductible and declined to purchase dental coverage at that time. So when she developed a toothache, she tried home remedies instead of going to the dentist. It turned out the toothache was an abscess, the infection spread into her neck and worked its way into her bloodstream. She nearly died, ended up in a coma in Intensive Care for 11 days with sepsis, had to have surgery on her neck to clear the infection out, and between the out-of-pocket on her health plan and lost wages from her self-employment income was out about $11,000. She did however save $39 a month on the cost of dental coverage.

Fortunately, she did have good health insurance which picked up the rest of her $190,000 medical bill.

Granted, this is an extreme example, but few would argue that getting regular check-ups and cleanings, and being able to get a root canal or crown when needed, will help you keep your teeth in your mouth, instead of in a glass next to the bed at night.

THREE TYPES OF DENTAL COVERAGE

TRADITIONAL/PPO PLANS:

These are the most popular plans and what most people think of when they think of dental insurance. These plans typically cover preventative care at 100%, basic services like cavities and simple extractions at 70%-80%, often with a six month waiting period, and major services like crowns and root canals at 40%-50%, usually with a 12 month waiting period. Yearly maximum benefits on these plans usually run between $1,000 - $2,000 for all services combined. These plans typically run from $35-$50 a month, for an individual, or $100-$150 a month for a family.

INDEMNITY PLANS:

These plans have been increasing in popularity because of slightly lower premiums. They pay a specified amount for each service you receive. They do not pay 100% for preventative care, but they usually do not have a waiting period for basic services and sometimes have a shorter waiting period for major services. Like traditional plans, they also have yearly limits on coverage of $1,000 - $2,000. By combining a dental indemnity plan with a dental discount plan you can achieve very effective coverage at a lower cost.

DENTAL DISCOUNT PLANS:

These are actually wonderful little plans for anyone who can’t afford a traditional plan. They will get you discounts of 50%-70% at participating dentists for all services, with no waiting periods or yearly benefit limits. These plans usually only run $10-$15 a month.

Don’t take a chance on fouling up the application and ending up having to pay a high tax penalty because your application didn’t go through, missing out on thousands of dollars in subsidies that you are entitled to, or getting a plan that doesn’t allow you to go to the doctors you want.
